Um, that’s ILLEGAL for him to ask you that question.  So yes, I would be offended.  How. Rude.  Men are so clueless sometimes.

@cleve_girl01: It is completely inappropriate for an employer to ask this question. It’s illegal for him to inquire about your age, your marrital status, etc.  Just know that if he ever fires you, you have grounds to sue him.

No, you are NOT overreacting. That is so ILLEGAL! Yes, you should be offended. It really is illegal. If you start seeing repercussions I might consider talking to HR. So not cool.

He might have asked it in a totally harmless and innocent way, but as a manager he ought to know better. What did you say in response?

Hmm…tough question. How close are you to your boss? If my boss said that, I would have something sarcastic and quippy ready because we are pretty close and have mostly informal interactions. If it were someone that I wasn’t close too, I would be a little weirded out but the good thing is that you have the job and have it as long as want. It is illegal to ask any questions like that during an interview but it can be a little tricky since you are already employed.

Don’t get me wrong, it is a very strange question to be asked especially if you are not that close but I wouldn’t sweat it too much. Sometimes, people end up being awkward because they aren’t comfortable dealing with situations like that.

I think that it’s harmless but bordering on becoming something much more. I believe that it is illegal to ask if you ARE pregnant so this comment is coming close to no no territory.

You are totally correct that you and your husband’s family plans are your business ONLY. Don’t feel bad, what your boss said was out of line. Here’s what the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has to say about it, in case he makes any more comments like this in the future: http://www.eeoc.gov/laws/types/pregnancy.cfm

Not to overreact, but you might want to seriously consider documenting this and letting someone in HR know. Not filing a complaint, per se – but it wouldn’t hurt to have it on record in case something unsavory were to happen down the road, should you become pregnant.
