We’re going for an outdoor ceremony, 20 minutes tops, in a woodsy area (there’s an indoor backup site in case of bad weather). The venue offers ugly blue plastic folding chairs (sorry, but there’s no way those are going in our photos) and simple benches that fit the woodsy theme (but hard on the butt, I realize).
We’re on a small budget, but I know we’ll have some spare chair covers…do you think it would be OK if we provided some chairs for our older/back-challenged guests, and benches for the rest? Or would you feel slighted as a guest if you had to sit on a bench?
I know that benches are getting kind of trendy now, so it’s not like we’d be the first jerks to do this. I’m definitely going to stock up on excellent pillow sales during the next few months (I have seen pillows for crazy low prices, even cheaper than renting more chair covers), so people will have some bench-comfort.

I wouldn’t complain about having to sit on a bench for just 20 minutes. If I have a little seat cushion, that would be a plus too! Are those benches fairly clean looking? If people are dressed up, they might not take kindly to sitting directly onto unpainted wood, in which case the cushions would be much better. Just food for thought.

Nope! I love the idea, and especially if you can find cute pillows to go with your theme. Since your ceremony is so short, I doubt most people would even notice that their bum was hurting.
It would be super cute if you had the pillows in baskets and handed them out with your programs.

Awesome point about the nice clothing thing. (We’re going to be sure to let people know not to dress up too fancy anyway, and there’s another good reason!)
A cushion basket *would* be adorable! Now I’m excited rather than skeptical. Thanks!

i wouldn’t mind a bench at all! i actually went to a beach wedding where they only had seats for the older adults and everyone else stood for the ceremony. it was beautiful and no one was upset because it was so nice out!

I think your idea sounds great! Colored pillows would be so welcoming….and comfortable. And, everyone would understand special seating for older individuals and people with back issues.

Wouldn’t bother me at all as long as my cute dress didn’t get dirty or torn from being on bare wood 🙂 A lot of outdoor weddings I go to don’t have any seating apart from a couple of rows for family/old/pregnant folks, so I think you’ll be fine.

I’d be happy with the bench, as long as the wood was smooth and clean.

I would be ok with sitting on a bench.

I think sitting on a bench is perfectly okay. I made my guests stand. 😛

Can you rent some white chairs? Our rental company only charges about $1.20 apiece. I would have some chairs up front reserved for those who need them, then benches, and let any remaining people (probably those with squirmy kids) stand in back.

As long as there is enough room on the benches for all, I have NO issues with this!
A seat for every bottom, I always say.

I think it could definitely work, people shouldn’t mind it

People shouldn’t have issues with benches, but it is a good idea to provide chairs for elderly people or those with bad backs, etc.

I love the idea and think you can make it work!
