I drove 40 minutes to work for 4 years. Would not do it again. I now live 7 minutes from my job and love it. We bought 11 acres and plan to build a house, but it only adds on about 10 minutes to my commute. I absolutely hate driving though. I didn’t mind my morning commute so much, but when I was just ready to be home in the evenings, that 40 minutes may as well have been 4 hours.

My DH communted 75 miles (all toll road, not too much traffic) ~1+ hours each way (150 miles total per day) everyday for 4 years. The wear and tear and mileage he put on his car was ABSOLUTELY not worth it! And the tolls! Not to mention, in inclement weather he got stuck out there and had to crash with family close to his work when he couldn’t make it home or risk not getting into work. IMO, not worth it.

ETA: Another thing to consider – when underwriting a mortgage, they need you to live within a certain mile radius of the house or they won’t count your income (this was a Catch 22 for us when we bought our house).

I don’t think driving that far is at issue as I used to sit in traffic for an hour anyway. How if it increases a lot with traffic, I wouldnt.

I personally am not a fan of long commutes. The time adds up! However, there are plenty of people who do it and are fine with it. It just depends I think.
