I did.My dress retails at 3k. With alterations (bustle, bra cups, tailoring) it would have been more. I found a girl the same measurements as me who already added a bustle and bra cups. She even gave me her beautiful customized sparkly belt and veil as part of it too. All for 1k! 🙂

I intended to buy a secondhand dress, but I’ve stalked ebay and craigslist and once wed and all that and I haven’t seen anything that I like that fit my budget or my body. So I think I’ll buy another sample gown instead.

I know this is a really old thread, but I wanted to *bump* as I’m considering getting myself a second hand dress.

All the shops near me seem to range from about £1000 per dress up to £4000, which is money I’d rather spend on my honeymoon!

My question to you guys is, even if you did buy a second hand dress, did you go to any fancy bridal shops and still enjoy the ‘experience’ of an expensive wedding dress shop? I don’t want to feel I’ve missed out on the luxury experience with my girls and my mum where we have champagne etc. Did any of you go and try things on but actually end up purchasing a second hand dress?

I think it’s still good to try on the dresses at brialshops. You have to try to see what style looks good on your body shape. I would try on different types, ball-gown, mermaid etc to find out what style and designer you like. Do you want lace, beads, tulle, satin, etc? Then, you can check out online and see if you can find similar or same dress. Two people I know got their dresses second hand. They look beautiful but half the price. both of them live in NYC and it was easy for them to meet seller to inspect the dress before buying. One of my friend, also in NYC, sold her beautiful 2k Kara Keely dress for 1k after her wedding. it is still sold over $2000 ar Kleinfeld.  If you live near big city, it might be pretty easy to find dress by recently married brides.

Absolutely! I scoured the used sites for quite some time looking for dresses after figuring out what kind of style I wanted. Since I want Tea length, lace and dots, I was not able to find used dress that fit the bill. However, Davids Bridal had an awesome very clsoe version of a designer dress I loved but was way to expensive.

If you can find your dream dress used or a dress you love used, you can put that $ into other parts of the wedding or get a dress you would not have been able to afford otherwise!

I do agree with PP that you should go to bridal shops and fogure out what you want first. What I thougth I wanted and what I ended up loving were not the same thing.

Absolutely! I plan to try on dresses in a store to get an idea of what silhouette looks best on me, then hit up Tradesy or Pre-owned Wedding Dresses to find something that fits my ridiculously low budget. I’m hoping to spend no more than $250 since I know alterations will likely cost a pretty penny and an expensive dress just isn’t in my budget. If the dress hasn’t already been dry cleaned, I’ll try to negotiate a lower price since I think that’ll cost $100+. As much as I have no qualms about bad vibes from a used dress, I would get a little grossed out wearing something someone else sweated in all day that wasn’t cleaned after.

I used preownedwedding dresses. I had emailed a ton of sellers on tradesy but you can’t tell how old the posts are and I never got responses so it seemed they were long forgotten about. I set up an alert on preownedweddingdresses for the dress I wanted in my size, and yesterday morning I got an email saying “This dress has been posted” and I snatched it up!
