i was super frustrated with the dresses that were available in my area so i decided to get my dress made. it’s a simple, vintage-inspired dress — silk, with a deep v-neck, empire waist, with a blue sash with a bling-y brooch (calling it a sash is a little misleading — it’s not something that you can take on and off). i loved it. i looked great in it (of course)! 🙂
since i just got married, i think i’m a little too emotionally attached to think about selling but i wondered if there was even a market for it — it’s not a style that one can just look up (like, jenny packham XYZ).
my questions are: would anyone consider this? and how much would be reasonable to ask for a dress like this (it cost me around 2k)? sometimes i see used wedding dresses being sold for only 20% off retail and it makes me wonder.

I personally would not unless it was made by a reputable up-and-coming local designer whose other work I could actually see. I think there’s just way too much of a variable with custom dresses. Part of buying a brand I knew (Christos) was, for me, knowing how well the Christos dresses I have seen in person were made, felt, etc.
But I’m not everyone! I’m sure it’s absolutely gorgeous and might be perfect for someone. Good luck!

I bought a used custom made gown (never worn – the bride just changed her mind and got a different dress), so it’s possible 🙂

Don’t see why not – though you might get more for it from someone local enough to try it on – online the risk factor of not knowing the quality might make me pay less for it (though I’m sure you could set a lower limit if you were worried)

I have actually seen someone get a dress custom made that was a replica to a Kenneth Pool, and it is for sale, so I know that it can definitely be done. As a matter of fact, I think it was sold, though I am not sure. She was selling hers for 2500 I think, and the price she paid was 3000. If she wanted the original KP version, it would have cost well over 5000. She had an awesome wedding gown designer, that is why such a huge price tag.

A wedding dress with a no name desginer or local designer that is not well known definitely will not hold its value as much as a dress bought from a well known and established desginer. Having customer dress make could be very risky because you have no idea how the dress is going to turn out unless you’ve seen the exact style that seamstress or local desginer has made for someone else that really impressed you. Having a custom made gown still cost at least 2k to 4k depending on the style, fabric and how good the seamstress or desginer is, and chance is the dress may not turn out as well as you want and you will still have to buy the dress since they put all that hard work into it. Lastly for a custom dress from a local designer that costs that much, I’d much rather buy a dress from a well known designer becaue it will retain its resale value in case you wan to resell. There are always so many styles from so many different desginers to choose from. I would only get a dress made if it is significantly less than the dress I want, and the quality and material is more than 95% like the one I want.
