With the news story about potentially habitable planets being recently discovered, my mind started to wander.
If you could have all of your worldly debt paid off and go free and clear of any taxes or other kinds of expenses, would you (and your Darling Husband or SO) go colonize a new planet? I suppose you’d have to qualify with some sort of trade, but the first few years, you’d have housing, food, etc. and your job would be just to… well, live.
As for me, if Darling Husband wanted to, I would. He’s an electrician and I am a researcher. As long as we could Skype and visit every few years, I think I’d be okay with it… as long as there were no space monsters.

If we both wanted to & we both felt it was safe (relatively speaking) then heck yeah! I’m with you though I’d have to be able to syke with my family occasionally.
I thought you were asking about colonizing in the literal sense. I was like oh hell no I’m not populating an entire planet out of this hooo-haa…. LOL

@BeckyS0: Bahahaha–I think that’s part of it, though, you’d have to be of child-bearing age, I suppose, to help build the population. Not like a baby-factory, but at least be a family with 1 kid.

I might, after my parents arr gone and assuming my sis and her hubby came too. I like my family too much to leave Earth without them.

No. I would not leave Planet Earth. I’d go to another country, maybe. On Earth.

FH has already signed us up to be on the waiting list to apply. I would only if he really wants to do it which he does. I have no real trade besides looking pretty 😉 I guess I have a few years to figure out how to do something useful. FH says there is no going back to earth for the first settlers though.

@MrsLongcoatPeacoat: Have you ever seen the show TerraNova? It is a similar concept, but was cancelled after one season, much to my dismay. I watched the entire first season on Netflix in a week! LOL.
I might consider it, but I’d really only be happy about it if my friends and family were all coming along for the ride.

Hmm. I don’t know. I’ve gotten used to a particular level of sunlight, lol. What if it’s really dark, like northern Earth in the winter?
Also, what if I have a craving for a particular type of food, but the colonizing organization forgot to bring a supply of Cheez Doodles or root beer? 🙂
Free housing and food would be worth considering, though!

YES YES YES.
I told Darling Husband for YEARS that if we colonize Mars, I’m SO GOING. 🙂

Depends on the planet.
I love to travel around the world, but I don’t visit the sulfur mines… KWIM?
If the planet is halfway as hospitable to human life as earth though, you’ll have to fight me for a seat on the shuttle… :))) I love adventure and exploration.

I would totally go! My debt is the worst thing about my life!!! I would be the teacher on the new world, telling the kids all about Earth as well as helping them make sense of their new world. That would be AWESOME.

@MrsLongcoatPeacoat: “as long as there were no space monsters.”

@everyheart: OMG… I didn’t even THINK about the junk food rations… I’m sure we’d be okay. Let’s say everyone can give a wish list of up to $500 worth of specialty items per year in each category: food, entertainment items, and art supplies. That would be ON TOP of having stuff for the entire colony.
@Baroness_Meg: Now I can’t wait to get home and look that up!
@peachacid: Totally going to look those up.

Yeah, we’d both definitely do it.
