I’ve been trying to research videographers that could possibly fit into our budget. After an exhaustive search I came up with just one. I emailed him, no response, emailed again, and he said the original was in the junk folder. A few days always go by between responses.
After a week and a half of my most recent email, I hadn’t received a response. I emailed once more as a final attempt to contact him, stating that the communication dropped off. Now that about two weeks has passed I’ve just now received a response, apologizing for the delay and that he had a recent death in the family and hasn’t been to a computer.
His blog and Facebook page haven’t been updated in about 3 weeks when previously it was active, so he could be truthful. He has all 5 star reviews on weddingwire, I love his videos, but I’m torn about whether or not I should write him off or give him the benefit of the doubt. If we don’t go with him, we won’t have a videographer…which is a nice-to-have not have-to-have.

Yikes, I would proceed with caution. I have been judging vendors on how long they take to get back to me.

Things happen in life, and hopefully no more deaths, so I would keep going, he might end up being the best photographer ever! 🙂

@kmarie719: seeing as you still have quite a few months to go he may not feel he has to get back to you super urgently in this difficult time for him. I would give him the benefit of the doubt as it would be highly unprofessional for someone to lie to say they had a death in the family. I would wait a while and see if he follows up with you. I often expect quick responses from vendors too but things do happen. He may be an awesome videographer.

If he was totally sketchy, I would think his weddingwire reviews would reflect that. You may have just happen to start communication at a bad time (not your fault just a coincidence). If you really want a videographer and he fits your budget, I would at least schedule a meeting. See how quickly he responds to this (this shows you’re really interested in his services) then gauge him from there. You’ll be able to see if his personality works for you as well.
