I already do it! Do I love it? No. But there’s an upside. It’s nice to have a good period of time to transition my mind to and from work :p I reccomend good music and books on tape! If everything else in your life is good, I think it’s worth it 😉

Like many here, I live in the dc metro area, home of horrific commutes. SO was warned from the outset that, come hell or high water, I would not leave dc. We met in real life, but i was pretty happy to learn that on his okcupid profile he wrote he had “a strong preference for people in the district”. Thus, we live in a shoebox, without a car, and I couldn’t be happier.
for that reason, I totally SUPPORT you moving to the country! If you are a country mouse, embrace it! (Personally, coming from NYC, DC feels suburban to me–the perfect mix). People think I’m ridiculous for the compromises I’m willing to make to stay in the city and raise well-educated kids here, but to us it is worth it. Thus, all those evenings when I walk the 20 minutes from the closest decent grocery store lugging a granny cart of groceries don’t phase me. I don’t even dislike them! maybe, for you, the equivalent is the two hours in the car a day.
I would start by renting, though, to make sure. Personally, find commuting exhausting (unless on foot).
Eta: oh my god, that is not meant to sound like a jerk! I honestly dont think one preference is better than another. Cities aren’t sny better, just different
