I have a friend who has been married a few months, but today a guest asked for their gift back. On the weekend of her wedding she had a falling out with her father, so he told all of his friends not to attend. Now months later, one of those friends wants their gift back. I find this to be the rudest request, and quite delayed.
What do you bees think? Is this ever okay?

Wow, no way! A gift is a gift… it’s not conditional.

No, it’s never ok. That’s completely rude! Is she giving it back?

Admittedly, I’m not the etiquette expert, but no!!!!!!!! I’ve never heard of such a thing!!!!

Absolutely NOT ok.
But, that being said– if a couple gets an annulment, the gifts should be returned. Not that I would ask for it back in this event, but I did have a friend who got married in late September and seperated before Christmas… The groom was very surprised when the bride refused to return the gifts (she left him) he did however call all of “his” guests from the wedding and offer to return them (and admitted to me he had to buy a few of them new again, because the bride took them with her).

Incredibly rude. Sounds like the guest was more making a point about the bride’s relationship with her father than anything.

Nope, rude, rude, rude. I would duck their calls until they got over it.

i have never heard such a thing. rude.

I would never, ever ask for a gift back. It’s appalling that she even has to entertain that kind of request.

Wow… this is crazy and rude. The only time I could even consider having a gift given back is if the wedding is annulled/divorced within a short time, or MAYBE if the bride uninvited someone herself. But the guest should never ask for a gift back!

That’s awful..and goes to show just the type of person he is. I’d say screw you.

HOW RUDE! I would never. I’ve heard that you should be ready to return the gifts if you break up in less than a year… I wouldn’t expect my gift back then, either! A gift is a gift is a gift. YOU DON’T TAKE ‘EM BACK!
