@vegas33:  absolutely not. My father died suddenly but had I known he was going to pass I would have made it my priority to help take care of him and spend time with him. My mother is still alive and I’d do the same for her. I would also do the same for my siblings. But, that’s because I’m close with those people. Family dynamics are interesting and I can’t judge others for the choices they make, you shouldn’t either.

I believe in helping family, even if you didn’t “ask to be born”. However, I also believe that adult children of sick parents have a right to have fun and get breaks from the extremely difficult and challenging job of taking care of a parent. To keep their sanity and mental health for one. So it is really hard to make a judgment here. If she is the only relative who is local that they have to rely on, that is difficult position for her. At least if she had another sibling nearby, they could share the burden.

You stated that it would not be easy for you to help because you are not local. You certainly have every right to live where you want or where jobs take you. But it seems unfair to me for relatives who choose to live far away, and therefore do little or nothing in these situations, to criticize those that are close by.
