@hyperJulie: I’m assuming if you have enough money to throw a black-tie wedding, you associate with those who can afford a $120 tux rental for a day. And yes, if you can’t afford it, you shouldn’t go. The bride is putting a lot of time and money into a black tie event. Either abide or send your regrets.

I’d love the excuse to go buy a nice gown! And DH owns a tux (although we wouldn’t mind renting one if he didn’t).

@Wed2Attn: I guess this is so far from my own experience that I simply cannot understand or relate to it. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that someone from a lower middle class background could grow up to become independently wealthy, or marry someone who is. I just can’t conceive of being so concerned about how my guests are dressed to think that I would rather not have them there than have them there and under-dressed.
