We just got married, and next year his brother gets married. I wanted to do something nice and personal for his brother (unlike his sister, who gave us a gift card, sigh…). What would you think about a handmade quilt?
I’ve made the one we have on our bed, but that’s it. My mom has made several – for my parents home, for the 5 year anniversary of my siblings, and for two close friends/family weddings (my cousin, friends in India), which is where I got the idea. Even though I’ve only made one, I’m quite good at various crafting things and have sewed before, so while it’s not going to be perfect – it’s handmade after all – it won’t be amateurish.
In addition to taking a ton of time to make, materials will probably be $150-200, so this isn’t exactly something I want to do if it won’t be appreciated. If you guys vote it up, I’ll check and ask the Fiance what they like and their colors – I’m not crazy enough to invest time in this without making sure it’s wanted. Is this something that you’d like to receive? Or would you prefer something more monetary off registry? Or you like personal, just not this idea? (In which case, suggest another personal item please.)
I could do a cross-stitch easily instead, I’ve made a bunch (including a few that fake people out as paintings), but frankly I doubt many people would like to receive one. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of anything else I could make, or something else I could personalize based on their interests. I’m leery of going off registry just for the sake of saying I’ve done so.

My Mother-In-Law made us a cross-stitch as a wedding gift and I LOVE it. It is so beautiful. And it means so much that she took the time to make it. I would also love the quilt is someone gave us that as a gift. Everyone is different though, I prefer meaningful gifts myself. I say if they are the type of people who you think would appreciate it, go for it!

I think quilts as gifts are AMAZING, but I’m probably biased. There are 6 kids in my family, I’m the 4th to get married – each child has gotten a quilt. The first two were quilts handmade by my great grandmother. She passed away, however, and her quilting group made the third. I guess you could say it’s a tradition in our family and I can’t wait to get our ‘wedding quilt’!

I think that would be nice if you knew their style. I am not a fan of the quilted/cross stitched look for anything, so if someone gave us something like that it would never get used. But if you think that fits in with them go for it!

Future Mother-In-Law has dropped hints that FI’s cousin will be giving us one- what a great gift! I think it’s a good idea to run it by the couple, just in case (make sure they’d like one), and definitely check on what colors they want. It sounds like ours will be in our wedding colors, which doesn’t go with our bedroom at all, so it’ll unfortunately end up in the guest room.

Personally I wouldn’t like this BUT I am insanely picky and I coordinate everything in my house so that’s why I wouldn’t be too crazy about it.

That’s a sweet idea and it’s a lot of effort. However I picked out my bed set in my registry and I’d rather have that.

I would love love love it!!! I want a wedding ring quilt so bad for after we’re married it’s a little insane.
My mom is making us a cross stitch sign that we will be hanging up or putting somewhere at the ceremony/reception. I love it. I think it’s so personal and sweet 🙂

Personally, I like more modern bedding. I might use it for a blanket for on the couch but I doubt I would use it enough to make it worth all of your time and money.
On the other hand, if it is their style than it would be an AMAZING gift. I really do like personal gifts.
We had one of these made from an etsy seller but it would have been even nicer if someone had made one for us. I’m not in the least bit crafty but it could be a fun project if you are! It has the lyrics to the couples first dance song.

Sounds like an awesome gift, but I suppose it depends on their style. You’ll know best if it is something they would want or not.

For reference, this is my quilt. Sorry for the terrible lighting, it’s hard to see the colors properly.
@Mrs. Castle: For my sister’s wedding, I did make her a cross-stitch, but I knew she likes them before I offered. (I was 19 then, so I hadn’t made a quilt yet.) I told her I’d make her any as complicated as I’ve made before – which is *quite* intricate, but she took me up on it and opted for one not too bad.
@love108: lol 🙂
To all posters asking if they’d like it – I’m fairly sure the fiancee will appreciate it, even though she doesn’t tend to do handmade items herself. I tend to be careful on gifting handmade items because I want people to like them and not wish for store-bought. But, that said, the year before last for christmas I made them a variety of homemade chocolates, including a bunch of better than reese’s peanut butter cups, and they basically told me I could keep making that every year for them and they’d be quite delighted. The Brother-In-Law I’m not sure if he’d care as much, but I suppose, how many guys do care? But, that’s why I’d check with them first. But I wanted a gut instinct if it was a good idea before I do, so they don’t either feel like they 1) have to accept or 2) think it’s a ridiculous idea. (You can decline and not think it ridiculous.)

I think that would be a wonderful gift! I would be thrilled to receive it!!

I think it’s really special of you to want to do a gift like this, but it would be lost on me and probably put away in my storage locker or buried in the closet. I already have quilts (including handmade ones), and they match my color scheme and taste.

Like PPs said I suppose it depends on the person, but I would personally LOVE to receive a handmade gift like this!! The one you showed us is beautiful by the way. You are incredibly talented!! Oh and yes, I’m with @love108:. No one got us any bedding, send me one pls?! 😉 I promise it will not go unappreciated! 😀
