The thing is… it depends on how desperate you are…

I’ve worked some really ******, low paid jobs. In that case, you have no choice. You get to live where you can afford and that’s that. It’s easy to be judgemental of people in those circumstances and say “why did you get a pet, if you were in such dire circumstances?” but two of my three were picked off the streets… literally… what else could I have done?

Nowadays, I am less desperate, so I would have the luxury of never moving to somewhere without pets. But if you are the bottom of the food chain, then you really have no alternative, and that’s really sad.

Not a chance. I have raised her since she was too young to be away from Mom (hand fed her, etc). I wouldn’t give her up for anything.

@Twyla_Smith:  Not unless I had to. When you get pet you make a commitment to look after it, even when it’s inconvenient.

Darling Husband and I have moved every year since we graduated high school and have had cats for the last 5 years. Although it sometimes meant paying a little more for an apartment, we never once considered giving our babies up!

I would never move somewhere that didn’t allow my pets, I could never give them away. It will be hard enough moving out and leaving my dogs behind at my parents’ place, as they technically own the dogs.

Fiance and I live in an apartment that doesn’t allow pets, but it doesn’t really matter because we don’t have any pets, although we’d like to in the future. If we had pets and had to find a new place, I would absolutely NEVER give them up. I would find a place that allows pets or pay extra or do whatever I had to do!

Absolutely not. That is why we waited to get a dog until we owned our own home!

While I was in college, my family adopted a stray kitten, who became “mine,” even though we knew I’d move to Japan after I graduated.  So she still lives with my parents.  I’d love to move her to Japan with me, but right now it’s just not possible.

No, I wouldn’t. And lately, doing searches online for places that allow pets, is ridiculous. I can find 50+ places for rent, and maybe 2 of them would allow any pets (with all kinds of deposits and fees of course). It’s a pain in the butt, but I wouldn’t give up my kitties for all the money in the U.S. Treasury.

Never! The only way would be if I was forced to relocate to another country. Then I would find them a GOOD home – NOT dump them outside, leave them behind or take them to a shelter.

We would have to be in some pretty dire straights to even consider it, and then it would be a “we can’t provide for these babies, so it’s best for them that we find a loving family who will.”  That will never happen, though.  We’ll actually be going through this next year, as we’re planning to move across country to Seattle.  I’m already finding it may be a pain in the ass to find a place that will allow them, and we will pay more, but we don’t care.  Our kitties are our babies, they’re family.  Not bringing them with us is not an option.
