I had a car that I named “Rosalyn” once. But I still like the name. I also had a fish named “Danny” at one point. I still like that name. But I wonder if I could ever name my future kids with those names because I already used them on a car and pet… What do you think? Is it weird? Would you/did you do it?

At first I thought the “name your kid after a car” thing referred to kids named Mercedes and Bentley, etc. lol. I never really named any of my cars…
But, I have thought about this before regarding reusing a name of a pet. My childhood dog’s name was Lily, and to this day I still really love and adore that name. She was my baby, and when she passed I got lily tattoos, so yes, I would still absolutely consider the name if I ever have a daughter. I also had a cat named Mia, and I really like that name too, but that cat was an asshole lol, so I don’t think I would name my daughter Mia. I have 2 frenchies now named Darwin and Zoey. I would absolutely use Darwin as a middle name for a hypothetical son, but I would pass on the name Zoey for a little girl.

While I was very very pregnant, I decided I wanted to name my daughter Acie, which is the name of our current cat. My husband reluctantly agreed and I spent a couple days excited before I realized that my husband thought I had really lost my mind. We didn’t name the baby Acie, but sometimes I regret that! Its such a god name!

When I saw that I thought:
“We named the DOG Indiana” from The Last Crusade. I need to watch me some Harrison Ford now!

I wouldn’t, I would want to come up with a new name that make sense for its own special reasons. This actually goes to the extent that I wouldn’t use a pet’s nickname for anything else – either a child or a future pet. For example, I often call our oldest cat Mumin (after an adorable kids book character) and some days I really regret that this because I would love to have another cat one day named just that. However, it’s now so integrated with our kitty that it would feel really weird for me to just transfer it, like he would be easily exchangeable (like just adding a II after the same name as your first pet once it’s dead).

I don’t think so. I also thought you meant naming after a specific type of car model which would be a no-go for me since I don’t really about cars that much and it would feel impersonal. The only names we’ve given our cars have been joking names…Crunchy, Baldy, Sharkbait (that one eventually turned into Bruce though), so not very appropriate for a person. Our pet names are fairly similar-Muneca (both my SO and I have little dogs named this, it’s kind of odd), PoPo (short for Chipotle), Brownie, Taquito, Donatella/o (we still have no idea if that turtle is a boy or girl)…the only dog we have with a “human” name is Kallie, and even so I would have a very difficult time not associating that name with an animal.
I think if I was really set on using a pet’s name it would be more of a middle name than a first name, but even then, I’d still probably prefer using a deceased relatives name instead.

FI wants to name our first daughter Emma, after our cat (which was his cat before we met, so he obviously named her). I told him that if he liked the name so much, he should have known better than to bestow it upon a pet. I’m not naming my daughter after a cat!

I couldn’t do it.
I don’t name my vehicles (which is odd, bc I’m name obsessed), but we have a cat named Fiona. I never considered the name for a child before we named the cat that. I always like it but it never made it to my contenders list… But after we named the cat that and started using it so often… I realized after a trip to the vet (where they gave her fiances last name) that it sounds great with my fiances last name and was slightly regretting using it on a cat and not saving it for a baby. At least we have some contenders that I love just as much with his last name for when we have a baby 🙂

howtobeawife: i dont think those are weird names. you just used them before because you liked them. i named my car honeybucket. so i wouldnt call my child that lol. i thought about naming my child after Arts parents boat. misty dawn. thought it was such a pretty name that flowed but they named their bulldog that. so i will not be naming my child that lol. i think it all depends on the name. and yours sounds fine. 😉

I have every intention of naming a son after my sister’s dog. Everyoe thinks I’m crazy, but I love the name and the dog!

my brother has the same name as one of my mom’s first and favorite pets. althrough my brother was named after a deceased relative and not the dog, we always joked to my brother that he was named after the dog.

As an adult my first dog was named Mitchell. It’s lucky I have 2 girls because I might have fought to name a son that!

howtobeawife: I actually used one of my favorite baby names for my cat. I was nineteen at the time and was convinced I was never getting married or having children, so when my family adopted two kittens, I gave the girl kitten the name of Elsa. Now, five years later, engaged and looking ahead, I’m kicking myself for using the name for a cat. I’ve thought of using the name, but with the popularity of Frozen, I think I’ll just let it go.
Edited because I just realized the pun and I’m face palming so hard.

I don’t have kids but I’m considering using a name that DH’s family named one of their dogs. Hey, I wasn’t there to name it, and it has a name that’s pretty old, and I really like the name…hahaha.
