Honestly…..it depends on if I like/dislike the family ring.

Mine is not an option on your list,

I have a new ring made from an older ring on my side that was given to Fiance when he asked my dad,

    ETA I didnt vote

I wanted and hot my own ring. I like family rings for push presents or rhr. But my engagement ring was about US and our marriage not about great grandma’s.

I’m picky about my jewelry. Our families’ rings are either uber art deco or classic but (IMO) uninteresting, and neither of those styles appeal to me at all. So I’m super glad Darling Husband asked me to design something that fit my personality.

I didn’t vote.  I would consider a family stone, but in a new, modern setting.  Wink

I have a family ring. I would have loved a new ring but I do love this one. I’ll pass it on if and when I have a daughter getting married, at which point I’ll get a ring of my own.

If you like the family ring then think of all the money you’ll save to put towards the wedding/a house/whatever else you fancy.

I always thought getting a family ring would be cool, alas none to be had in either of our families.

My mom does has a Sapphire ring that looks a lot like Princess Diana/Kates that I guess we could have used

@melisslp: Not all antique settings look old-fashioned.

@SpecialSundae:  True…I just know that I don’t like my Mom’s setting or my Grandmother’s (who is deceased).

I had a family ring, but it isn’t my style at all.  I had my own style and ideas of what I wanted.  While I like tradition and sentiment of an heirloom, I wanted my Darling Husband to have the chance to pick out something that would become our own family ring.  So, it wasn’t the right choice for me.

@melisslp: I’m lucky that I’ve loved all the matriarchal gems in my family (my granny’s ring was a 5 stone Victorian knuckle-duster that would have cost $50k to rebuild and I would have LOVED to have it, but it was lost when she died).

I’d prefer a family ring. I would be pretty unhappy if anyone bought me diamonds.

We were offered a family ring, but we didn’t even consider using it. But unlike a lot of family rings, this one had some unpleasant history behind it (i.e. divorce). And it wasn’t anything like what Darling Husband and I wanted.
