@amistry: Have you considered checking craigslist or kijiji. I always see nice dresses online.

Also, a lot of bees here have had amazing success with ebay or “china” dresses. Obviously not designer, but they are pretty gorgeous

I only bought this thing with just that purpose in mind. Lol! So the answer is a big, fat, YES.

Hey, try “Gown go round” in Newmarket. Its where I bought my dress. They have tons of dresses to try on in all different styles and dresses, some are seccond hand and some are left over dresses from other stores. The dresses there range from $200 and the highest I saw when I went was $800. I also got my veil there.

i am moving to Toronto this summer and will be selling my Jenna by Maggie Sottero.  My wedding is next week and I only plan to wear the dress for 6 hours!  And I plan to take very good care of it.  PM if interested.

You need to find something vaguely in the right size for you. Theres alterations sure, but you can’t expect a size 12 gown to have the same bust as a size 4. Smartbride and Brides’ Project is a great option. Kijiji too but Smart Brides actually let you search by size. Brides Project you don’t know until you get there but they have good variety especially in the sample dress size because a lo of stores donate older samples there. For me it was a bust.
