Fiance & I are trying to make decisions regarding our reception. Here are the logisitcs:
1) 50-60 guests
2) Reception venue is a wine cellar
3) Reception will be 3 hours at the LONGEST. That’s assuming no one gets lost on the way there, that no one dilly-dallies, etc.
4) We’ve decided no dancing (at an evening wedding! Shocking tehe)
So – right now we’re talking about hosting a cocktail-style reception with heavy appetizers, beer, and wine. For entertainment, Fiance really, really wants to book a magician that does strolling magic. He worked for a law firm that did this at their annual Christmas party and it was always a HUGE hit. It’s definitely magic for adults, not children.
But will our guests think this is just flat out bizarre?
EDIT: Here’s a somewhat cheesy Youtube clip of strolling magic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxfwJ03fRS0

Can you explain a little more what a strolling magician with adult-type magic is? I’m thinking Criss Angel with water stunts, but I doubt that is the case.

I would think it was bizarre…and also, I’d totally LOVE it.

Not bizzare at all. It will be great!

OH MY GOD! MY SO WANTS THIS!
This is actually one of the first things he mentioned when we first starting talking “wedding”! I thought he was the only one!!
I told him he could have it, on one condition: that the magician dressed like a regular guest and just did slight of hand stuff. SO is on board with it.
But, we will be having a full-on reception, so the magician will just be doing the cocktail hour, and then he will go to the kids room for their dinner buffet (to entertain)
I love this idea!!

I love the idea.
It is something that we are also considering doing.

Go for it. Fun. Lots of fun. The more fun the better.

@baldor1 – Strolling magic is where the magician walks around and everything is essentially slight of hand stuff. Every trick they do has to be done with things carried on their person, so they don’t obstruct the event or have to stay in a single place.
The magicians at his firm’s parties will just walk up to people and begin tricks; we’ve seen everything from your usual card tricks to one magician taking a guy’s wedding ring, putting it in a card box in his pocket, and it somehow ending up in a SEALED envelope in the guy’s jacket pocket! Another time he pulled the cups out (think ‘what cup is the ball under’ type cups) and from underneath is appeared: a ball, two balls, and then a freakin’ apple. All under one cup. No idea how that was pulled off lol.

I’m sorry I have to laugh because my little brother just sent back a wedding RSVP and in the dietary note section he mentioned an allergy to wheat and magic…

I’ve never heard of this, but it looks like so much fun! I think it’d definitely be something nice for your guests to enjoy 🙂

Haha I actually thought I was the first to come up with the idea! It’s a great way to get people excited and having fun. I just LOVE magicians though. My Fiance also thinks I’m insane, and it probably won’t be happening 🙁

personally i dont have any friends who like strolling magic or any magic for that matter lol so i would find it a bit bizarre, but if i already knew you and knew you liked that kinda of stuff then i would expect no less from your wedding. so am sure ur guests wont be to surprised. But remember that not everyone likes magic so not everyone is going to be thrilled

It would be weird, and fun. Not my type of deal at all, so my guests would find it odd, but if your Fiance wants it then I say go for it.

So awesome! I really love this idea.

Okay by accident I voted before I watched the youtube clip. I said it would be weird, but then I watched and realized – I would LOVE it!!! That guy is awesome and if I were a guest I’d be mesmerized by him! Go for it! 🙂
