I would plan on it, but kind of play it by ear once it gets closer. Who know’s how you will be feeling at that point. I went 2 hours away from home about a week before I delivered and it was nice to relax and have a little distraction.

I personally wouldn’t! And I know that my doctor would not be in favor of it. Check with your doctor and communicate your concerns to your friends 🙂

Check with your doctor and check with your insurance.  If you end up delivering at an out-of-network hospital and get whacked with 40% or more of the charges, you’re going to be wishing you’d stayed home!

Driving, sure, although you might possibly be uncomfortable for 3.5 hours, especially if you go into labor while there and are having to deal with contractions for that long in a car.

@chastenet:  Gotcha!  No worries, then 🙂  Especially if you’re not particularly concerned with who your doctor is when you deliver.

That isn’t TOO awful long of a drive so I might go if I was feeling alright.  It wouldn’t be a very fun car ride for 3.5 hours back to Paris if you do go in to labor though!

I agree with some of the PP’s and say plan to go but play it by ear and if you DO go then make sure to take a break every hour or so for a few minutes to streatch or you could get very uncomfortable. Most doctors suggest that if you are going on a road trip of any kind to make sure it’s not longer than 2 hours or, if it is, to take breaks because it’s not good for you to be so still for that long. It can cause back pain and major discomfort.

As long as you are close to medical care if needed I think you should be fine. When I read travel I was thinking plane and my first thought was ohh no! But since you are driving and will still have access to medical care as long as you feel up to it I don’t see the harm.

OP, I’m in a similar boat to you, a very good friend of Darling Husband (and me) is getting married about two hours away the day before our due date.  We desperately want to go to the wedding but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how we’re going closer to the time.

If you’re still going to be able to access suitable medical care where you’re going and you feel ok to travel then I say go!

I’d definitely plan on going – you can always back out at the last moment if your doctor thinks labour is imminent or if you’re not feeling well.  And if you do go into labour and aren’t able to make it back to Paris, you know you’d still be in good hands, courtesy of France’s government funded health care.

I think it would be a great distraction when things are starting to get uncomfortable and will probably be the last time you’re able to get away with your Darling Husband and friends before the little one arrives.   Go enjoy yourself!

    I would do it!

I am 37 weeks and yesterday we went to our family beach house. It’s on an island (with no hospital) and the only way to get off is by ferry. A couple people cautioned me, but I felt great the morning we left and I figured that if something did happen, 3 hours was enough time to get back to the mainland and go to the hospital without delivering baby in the car or something. First labors usually take a while.

I would plan on going. You can always see how you feel when the time comes.
