We’ve been engaged just over a year now and we’re planning on just upgrading the center stone from a .5 carat to a full carat. He just wants me to be happy and we both appreciate luxury so when we can afford it and the time is right…

Never. My ring originally belonged to FI’s grandmother. Plus, sentimentality aside, I love it! It’s simple and classic — exactly the sort of thing I would have picked for myself.
If I want more bling later on, I’ll ask him for a Past, Present, and Future.

My stone is an heirloom and I want to pass it on to our children someday, so I will get a new stone eventually. It’s not really mine, just mine for now.

I thought way too long about this question. Honestly, even though I don’t have my ring yet, I know the stone is going to be smaller than I would like (big hands!). However, it will be what he bought and gives to me, combined with the fact that I am the most sentimental person on the PLANET…we probably won’t ever upgrade based on sentiment alone!

We upgraded my ring but ONLY because my Fiance won a credit to a jeweler (long story). It’s the ring he would have originally got for me if he had the extra funds to spend. We kept the center stone & added to side stones and upgraded the whole setting to platinum! It also allowed us to get a platinum wedding band w/stones as well 🙂 I’m a happy girl!

We’re actually considering this right now. Not upgrading the diamond (it’s plenty big enough!) but changing the setting so that a wedding band would be able to sit flush against the e-ring. It would mean taking out the diamond and putting in new prongs. I don’t know…I like the look of the ring sitting flush, but the thought of changing my original ring in any way makes me sad, and Fiance doesn’t like the idea either.

I used to think I would, but I don’t think I could now, for sentimental reasons as many others have said. Even if I kept the diamond, I don’t think I could ever stop wearing my engagement ring exactly as he gave it to me! I do want a right-hand anniversary ring at some point though 🙂
