I’ve been looking at resetting my engagement ring for a while now. Resetting in platinum is very expensive and I’ve found some used, vintage settings that I really like and they are cheaper. My only concerns are: Will a jeweler even set my stone in a used setting I purchased elsewhere, Will a used setting require repairs that will make it more costly in the end, ect…
So, if you were resetting would you feel comfortable using a used setting? Any ideas on how to do a simple reset that doesn’t cost thousands of dollars?

An experienced jeweler will reset for you, and should be able to look at the setting and give you an estimate of any necessary repairs. I would look closely at the shank, some used rings have thinner shanks and may need redone. Otherwise, even with any prong/head work needing done, I bet you’ll save a bundle on a used vintage setting. 🙂 that’s my humble opinion anyway.

I would absolutly be comfortable using a used setting. As PP stated make sure that the setting is in good shape. Also, make sure your stone will fit in the setting.

minimalistbride : My experience has found that many jewelers will not set a diamond in a setting that you did not purchase from them. I would call around.
