I dealt with this in the opposite way.  I wanted a ring that symbolized that I was married, but not one so valuable that I would have to worry about wearing it when traveling, outside at night, in a high crime area, or whatever.  So I don’t have an engagement ring, and my wedding band is a plain gold band that I can wear anywhere without fear.

I’ve always had a fear of being burglarized, so I would rather wear it than leave it at home. I almost never take mine off, it’s pretty much become a body part haha.

DH did lose his ring on the honeymoon, though. 🙁 We went snorkeling, and I guess he didn’t think about it, but his finger shrunk and it fell right off. We snorkeled for hours but never did find it. Left a description at the resort that owned the land around there but I guess it never turned up. I like to look at the bright side and say we left a piece of our marriage in paradise… (albeit an expensive one).

I always wear my rings on vacation.  It’s been all over the world, snorkel, scuba, beaches, etc.  The only reason I may not wear it skiing is if it’s loose and night fall off taking on and off gloves.  In terms of safety, skiing is not cheap and isn’t usually a place for trouble imo.  Ppl leave 1000 dollar skis in the stands all the time.  You’d be more likely to have skis stolen from the rack than a ring from your finger.  I don’t trust hotel safes, so I’d never leave it there though.  No place safer than on my finger.  Even a home can get robbed if you leave it there.

I wear my ring everywhere the only place I haven’t taken it was Mexico cause I did not want to risk loosing it there or leaving it in a room safe.

Yes and no.

Short trips or trips where I know I won’t be “active” (aka have lots of reasons to take my ring off), I’ll generally wear it.

Trips when I know I’ll be taking my ring off a lot, like going to the beach, or where a ring would feel gross, like a theme park in the summer when my hands get sweaty and grimy from holding on to the lap bar, and I’ll leave it at home.  I might bring a simple stand in for longer trips.

It’s less of a worry about me losing it, and more about comfort.  I hate having grime between my ring and finger.

@Inlove2001:  I always wear my engagement ring when I travel – it just makes me too sad to leave it behind!

The only thing I’d say is to double check the conditions of your insurance. In NZ, my home contents insurance (which usually covers my ring) doesn’t apply once I leave the country, so I have to specify it as part of my travel insurance. I’m not sure if you would have the same sort of issue by going out of state? In addition, the travel insurance usually will only cover it if it gets lost or stolen directly off me, i.e if I left it in the hotel room and it was stolen, this would not be covered. I know insurance only covers the $ and not the sentimental value, but just something extra to keep in mind.

Wearing your wedding band sounds like a good compromise. Hope you have a great trip!

@Inlove2001:  I take mine with me. I figure I’m way more likely to lose/have it stolen back home than I am abroad, and IMO rings are made for wearing (people are also shocked I wear mine swimming) . I don’t see the point in having something you’re too scared to take anywhere.

@barbie86:  From past posts I think I read you are an avid traveller. Are there some destinations you would not take you ring?

I’m off to South Africa this year and have been debating if I should take my engagement ring. I’ve been advised not to wear expensive looking jewelry because of the high rate of street crime. I dont want to make myself look like a target. But I would never take it off at home, and wore it on honeymoon everyday, even swimming in the sea.

My wedding ring is a gold band so that comes with me whatever.

@LilLis:  I can only comment on where I’ve been; obviously it does depend on where you are going. I don’t know much about South Africa but from what I do know it would depend exactly where I was going g, and what I was doing. The only places I’ve been are Europe, Egypt, Turkey, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba: and I felt fine wearing jewellery in all those places. My personal feelings are that people get mugged all the time in my home time; I have also had jewellery stolen from my home. The risk exists anywhere, it’s just about being sensible. So yes, there are some places I wouldn’t wear flashy jewellery (Inc several areas in London), but for the most part, and for where I travel, it has never occurred to me not to wear my rings.

We just went on a ski trip for a week and I left mine at home. I didn’t want to leave them in the hotel all day. I would have been nervous. I have left them at home for work trips too. I work in a construction field so I don’t want them damaged. My husband bought me a stand in but I never wear it. I don’t think it’s a big deal not to have them on a few days

yes, I would wear it on vacation.  I think it’s best to just wear it all the time and not take it off at all…just my opinion though.

A couple years ago I decided not to take my e-ring on vacation to St. Lucia. The country is poor and since we were not staying at a Sandals or another all-inclusive and staying put I felt better by just leaving the ring at home. I wore my band .
