- Wedding: June 2014
I’ve mentioned before about how my parents had little to no money to contribute to the wedding – which I was fine with and expected.
Well, late last week my mom asked if she and my dad could come over to my house on Monday after work (so today) so I could give my dad his birthday present. Weird request, but sure. I told her they should swing by my work (I work at a zoo and we just opened a new exhibit), but she was acting really strange…saying they had “appointments” but wouldn’t tell me what they were, etc. I just chalked it up to medical things that they didn’t want to tell me about.
So I’m sitting at my desk about an hour ago when my mom calls – she asked if she and my dad could come to my work. I told them sure, so they showed up and we went for a walk around the grounds. My parents then told me that my dad had just gone and officially filed for retirement from the Carpenter’s Union (he’s a former carpenter who got laid off around 8 years ago – he’s been working FT at Home Depot since then). I congratulated my dad – then my mom adds “so with his first pension payouts, we’re going to give you $10,000 for the wedding.”
Do you want to know what is embarrassing? Falling to your knees in shock, while crying, in front of a group of teenagers you hired at work. I’m so incredibley grateful…and suprised! I don’t even have the words to thank them…I just feel like I need to do SOMETHING for them. My dad worked outside, in an a physically difficult, mentally exhausting job in freezing Missouri winters and scorching Missouri summers for 25 years in order to get this money – words can not express how floored I am that they are being so selfless and giving by letting Fiance and I use this money for something as frivolous and short-lived as a wedding. I’m definitely glad I have a good birthday present to give to my dad when they come by my house tonight! And I can’t wait to tell FI! We are so so lucky with our families – between his family and mine we were given all the money for our whole budget – we both originally planned on having to come up with every cent ourselves!
