Hello all! Maybe this is common knowledge but I have not heard of how to do this. For our wedding we wanted to use chalkboards but of course if you use regular chalk it will just erase. Is this a special pen or something that is permanent?

I took chalk and drew what I wanted on it(so I could erase if needed) then I went over it with a white paint pen. Looked great!

You can get chalk pens at most craft stores, even Target.

If you really want it to be eraseable, I suggest chalk ink makers. I bought some great ones from Papersource. They come in various colors and sizes, but here’s one option: http://www.papersource.com/item/Bistro-Chalk-Vivid-Fine-Point-Markers/028617482668.html
However, for most of mine, I ultimately designed custom vinyl lettering from Wall Written. It allows all your fonts to look the same throughout your chalk boards (or in my case mirrors). They have a lot of choices and shipping is fast. Application is a little tricky, but if you follow their step by step videos, you’ll get the hang of it easily. http://www.wallwritten.com.

I used chalk pens/markers. They worked great for the most part, and I used them on all of the chalkboards I had. There were two chalkboards and it didn’t come all the way clean, so I just kept those and plan to repaint them with chalkboard paint. All of the other chalkboards & baskets [w/ chalkboard inserts] washed up great!

The chalk pens work well. A trick if you have trouble erasing is to use a mr clean magic eraser. Add a little windex if it’s really stubborn!
