We have been looking around on the web and in books for a while now and have not found any readings that have spoken to us as a couple. Then my FI had the idea that we should each write our own reading! Something like a short story (one or two paragraphs as I know these things can be kind of boring) about something special having to do with our marriage.
For example, he has this memory of being 10 years old and talking to his dad about the kind of wife he would like to have some day (his dad has since passed on). My FI’s sister would read his story, and my best friend would read one that I would write. Has anybody seen this done before? Would you think it a nice personalized thing or somewhat strange? This is a secular ceremony of course.

Mi fiance is doing this and I LOVE the idea! He has done a ton of reading on relationships and marriage, and wanted to pull together quotes and ideas from all those books into a description of what he believes love and marriage to mean. I can’t wait to hear it!

Not weird at all, in fact I think it is immensely thoughtful and touching. Sure, there are a lot of nice, romantic, funny, sweet, etc, etc, readings out there… but anyone could read those. In writing these yourselves you’re creating another personal touch that is extremely intimate and lovely.
I think you two decided on a fantastic idea.

I am doing a mixture of personalized readings and things I have found on my literary travels. I have people coming that celebrate all types of beliefs. FI and I personally are just spiritual people, so for us it is approriate to incorporate different spiritual readings into our ceremony plus our own writings.
