We wrote our own and it was hands down my absolute favorite part of our wedding.  To me, the vows are IT, it’s what the whole day is about… you commiting to this marriage and each other.  So, they were very, very important to me.

We used resources from our premarital counselor, the internet, and our own ideas, and wrote our own vows.  They were similar in wording, but we changed some things to make them specific to us and our roles within our marriage.  I memorized them and was able to say them to my hubs at the altar without any help from the pastor.  I loved being able to just say them and not just recite them… it felt more personal and meaningful that way to me.

So, for us, it was definitely worth the work and hassle of writing our own to get exactly what we wanted.

We wrote our own ceremony, including our vows. All of it was highly personalized to us, and some of our vows were cute/funny in addition to being heartfelt. (He vowed to squash bugs and be my DJ; I vowed to make him snacks and be his calculator.) I think it’s definitely worth the effort; it makes the ceremony so much more meaningful for you and for your guests.

It’s great if you can memorize them (kudos to @piglet_625!!). I was too nervous that I would forget them, so we printed them on cards, which were held by the Maid/Matron of Honor until we needed them. She passed them to us and we read them aloud. Here I am reading mine:

@NJForever: Thanks. It was an incredible day; I had that smile plastered on my face from beginning to end. ๐Ÿ™‚ If you are interested in seeing the ceremony & vows, PM me with your email address and I am happy to share! I collected dozens of examples from websites and used them for inspiration myself…

@NJForever: Yay!  I’m so glad you found a solution that works for you guys!  I did have a cheat sheet up there, and I used it during the rehearsal, but during the ceremony it all kind of came to me.  Darling Husband read his to me though.  The pastor held the paper and we could still hold hands and say them to each other.  That was our pastors idea and I loved how we could still be touching, but still saying our vows off of a paper.
