We semi wrote our own vows.  We copied segments from a whole bunch of vows that we found  and then picked and chose the parts we wanted and edited it around to be what we liked.  There were some parts that didn’t flow, so I incorporated that into the ring exchange part.  We got the original vows that we took segments from from our pastor who gave us a document with a ton of stuff to go through and highlight what we liked.

We wrote our vows together from scratch.  We wanted to each write our own vows and have them be a surprise, but not have them turn out drastically different from each other in tone or length, so first we made a list together of things that we wanted to vow.  Examples: faithfulness, honesty, support each other in good times and bad, put our family first in our lives, etc.  Then we each wrote our own vows, including everything on the list in our own words.  (We each also added one or two additional personal things.)  We ended up with vows that “matched”, but in our own unique voices with personal touches, which I loved!

Writing our vows was my favorite part of wedding planning.  We spent a lot of time on it because we felt it was the most important part of the wedding, expressing our committment to each other.  I also really liked that our guests (all very close friends and family) got to know our relationship better through hearing them, and had a better sense of what marriage means to us.

We wrote our own vows – we basically stuck to the basics:

1) When we met…

2) I love you because…

3) I love that you love me. You do these things for me:

4) I promise to…

Happy vow writing! It’s all super worth it, I promise! 😀

@pengoala:  Ours were a very similar format:

You are…

I love…

Thank you…

I promise…

@Absolute:  We wrote our own vows and did them completely on our own. My husband’s were all over the place, but the basic structure was

“this is what I love about you”

“this is how you make me feel”

“this is what I promise to do in our future”

“this is what I want our future to look like”

We are doing both. We wanted traditional vows, but we also wanted totake the time to write and share our feelings. kind of like a testimony of our love.
