Uh right, so my insurance didn’t initaly pick up the cost for my emergency apendectomy, because the surgeon was ‘out of network.’ Seriously? I definetly did not plan to almost die ‘out of network’ on purpose. This is bullsh*t…

That’s sooo ridiculous!
If it’s emergency surgery do they really expect you to go and do research so you can find a doctor in your network? Total bs.
I heart Canadian healthcare.

I’m sorry you have to deal with this. My Fiancee basically mediates between hospitals and insurance companies, so I know a bit about this type of stuff…no expert though. Soooo…many times when it’s an emergency and there is medical documentation supporting that, you can appeal with the insurance company and hospital to cover it. For example: if your appendix burst and you’re in the middle of the street, the ambulance comes, they HAVE to go to the closest hospital no matter if it’s covered by insurance or not because it’s truly an emergency.
However, the problem with the appendix is many times you can go into the ER and although you need surgery immediately it’s not like a gun shot wound to the chest…they have the time to transfer you to a hospital that is “in network.”
Work with the hospital and insurance company to prove that it was emergency and hopefully they’ll be able to work something out.
Best of luck!

You’ll have to argue that there was no time for you to transfer to an in-network hospital with in-network doctors!

That sucks! An ex-bf was in a really bad car accident and was taken to the hospital when he was unconscious (he was in a coma for 3 weeks) and his insurance company refused to pay for anything b/c he didn’t notify someone before being admitted…um hello he was unconscious!!! how is he suppose to make a phone call?!?!?! There excuse, someone should have known to call. Insurance companies really suck sometimes!

yea, especially since i was in N. jersey and anyone “in network” would be in philadelphia, over 2 hours away. i was in surgery a hour before i would have gotten to the ‘in network’ doctors.
omg! @ june that is horrible! is he ok now?
