Thanks for the update! I must say, she is in the wrong trying to guilt trip you. You deserve your refund and though I understand it isn’t worth the headache, $400 is a lot of money to waste on blue styrofoam.
It SUCKS that her husband was diagnosed with cancer. My sympathies to her and I hope he makes a successful recovery. With that said though? WHO CARES. My brother is in jail. My parents just got hit by the worst of Sandy. My life is incredibly stressful right now. But you know what? I don’t let it affect my work. Blaming a bad cake on family issues is a sign of terrible professionalism.
If you have email correspondence with her discussing what you wanted in a cake, I really do suggest what other people have mentioned here. Take it to a small claims court. It shouldn’t take too long if you have documented evidence of what you asked for vs. what you received.
If you’re not going to fight this any further, I strongly suggest posting a negative review for her every POSSIBLE place and include that she tried to guilt you into letting it go. Again, I’m sorry for her personal life, but letting her walk over you and guilt trip you is how people like this keep getting repeat business. No one will take a stand.
