I don’t have that ring from James Allen, but I do have a JA ring with the thicker prongs. They have never bothered me because I have an emerald cut stone so round prongs on the corner don’t really cover my stone. For a round diamond, I can see why you’d prefer slimmer prongs. Have you discussed this with JA customer service? My fiancé was able to get them to put a platinum basket on my setting and they didn’t offer that option online. Perhaps they can slim the prongs as well?

brideonthedancefloor :  team claw prongs! I think they’re so dainty and delicate. and definitely allow the stone to shine! I think regular rounded prongs square off round stones too much, and covers up too much. claw prongs are GORGEOUS when done right! kinda hard to capture in a picture but I have claw prongs on mine! the ring I had mine modeled after had regular prongs, but i’m so glad I had them do claw instead

I vote claws, but I’m biased. My ring is 1.5mm french pave from Adiamor. I do have a basket, however.

I would definitely switch to claw prongs! With normal prongs, I feel like my eye is drawn to all the metal and not the stone.

I’ve only ever gotten rings from JA that already came with claw prongs, but I can definitely recommend using the chat feature on their site to get a quick answer to your question. Changing the prongs to a claw style might push the ring into “customized” territory, which might impact some aspect of the purchase, but anyone at JA can give you more info.
