Cobra is around $500 a month.  I think it would be worth it if nothing else for the peace of mind.  I know that is a lot of money, but you will be so devastated if something does happen during that time.

I definitely think he should take the job! It sounds awesome and his current workplace is toxic!

It might also be a possibility if he explains the situation for him to start on the 30th?  I would at least ask!

ETA: CONGRATULATIONS!

Definitely look into the grace period for Cobra benefits! I wouldn’t risk not having the coverage because it would be my luck that something would happen/I would go into labor when I didn’t have it!

For comparison, when I changed my work schedule and my office offered me Cobra, it would have been $864 monthly. At my last job, it was around $600.

Congrats!  I would sign up for the Cobra just in case.  $500 is a lot of money, but peace of mind is far more valueable.  I’m so happy that he found a place he will enjoy working (or least not hate)!

id take the risk. I wouldnt give up a great job opportunity just for the possibility of not having coverage for 3 weeks. Never live life with regrets. cross that bridge when you get to it. If anything you can make payments on your bill IF you were to go into labor or anything. Good Luck!!! Tell Darling Husband Congrats 😀

I don’t know if anything has changed since I started my job (or maybe it’s dependent on each individual insurance policy) but they specifically mentioned that any pregnancies that occurred before the benefits started would not be covered since it would be considered a preexisting condition. Are you sure this won’t be an issue with your DH’s new job?

I would definately look into Cobra or a private insurance plan for one month for you and babe. Definatley a risky move to not have any coverage that late. How exciting for your little family!

ETA: Even an expensive Cobra is better then owing thousands for an early delivery and then if heaven forbid one of you had any complications.

Edit the edit- You beat me to it Cait Marie

@MrsRuby:  Without insurance, delivery without any complications can be like $30k+. That’s a heck of a balance to pay down.

OP: I definitely think he should take the job and just inquire about the logistics of the benefits. Cobra is pricy but you really shouldn’t be uninsured during the final weeks of your pregnancy. Anything can happen.

@UpstateCait:  of course.

I didnt write it out; but i agree that a private insurance company or cobra should be looked into. Sorry for leaving it out!

@mwitter80:  Cobra for $500 a month is a steal. We pay $400 for our benefits through work.

Congrats to your DH!  Definitely agree that Cobra, regardless of the cost, will be well worth it.   You’d hate to have to stress about this during those three weeks and in the grand scheme of things, a few hundred dollars out of pocket won’t really make or break your finances.    I’d definitely look into the retroactive bit though – I remember when I left my job in the States, I could do Cobra retroactive for 30 days, which was awesome.  If you have that option, it would really be the best of both words!

Exciting times for you and your DH!
