What about "Somewhere over the rainbow"? That song is lighthearted and makes me smile every time I hear it. 🙂

I LOVE this idea!  I think that if you have the song played at a more upbeat tempo, it will make everyone smile.  I would vote for You Are My Sunshine over Here Comes the Sun any day!

I think the song is sweet from a sentimental perspective(my mom used to sing it to me as well) but ONLY the first chorus… My mom suggested I have it at my wedding, but there was just no way, no how I was going to have a song about my lover leaving me played during the wedding. Some people might be a little shocked to hear it, but if thats what you want, it’s your wedding!

Most people won’t really think about the sad part if you aren’t singing it. You’ll be fine. I also liKE Here Comes the Sun as well though.

I think "You Are My Sunshine" is sweet.  Even more so because of its sentimental value to you!  Besides, I have a feeling most people are only familiar with the chorus anyway.  I think it’s a great choice!

Since we’re on the topic of lighthearted, upbeat heliocentric songs… Ever heard Matt Costa’s "Sunshine"?  I’ve been considering it for our recessional.  :o)

…I think its a little bit weird and might come across a bit too "forced." Then again, my tastes are a bit more traditional thank yours. 🙂

What about "there is love?" That’s  a bit more contemporary and is a nice song. "Over the rainbow" is  a nice touch too. 🙂

I just wanted to add that up until I read your post, neither my fiance nor I even knew there were lyrics beyond the chorus.  Our moms sang it to us when we were little, as well.  I think a lot of your guests think of it as a sweet lullaby and not a sad song about heartbreak.

Katie, you inspired me!  My fiance and I just picked You Are My Sunshine as our first dance (with STRICT instructions not to play past the second verse, which, even so, is probably pushing it a little).  Thanks for putting it in my mind!

I agree, I never knew the song associated with sadness! me and the Fi sing it to one another, or if one of us is having a bad day we’ll text or email the song to one another and we know to cheer the other one up! we love the song!
