I’m not going to lie, this is a tiny bit of a vent, because I’m so cross at our original florist.
We first went with her because lots of people we knew had used her, she does wonderful work and she was really open and friendly when I went to discuss what we wanted. Plus, I live on a tiny island, and florists are few and far between.
I’m not a flowery person at all – I don’t buy them for the house, I don’t buy them for people so I have little idea on how much flowers costs.
But what I do know is that gypsophilia is beautiful, fairly common to find and low cost. I love the way it looks and I’m on a tight budget, so I decided I’d just get lots and lots of gyp for everything.
I wanted a small bouquet for me, 4 smaller ones for the BMs, 3 buttonholes, 2 corsages and some little bits for the church. I also asked for some extra, so I could decorate the cake table if I needed to, and she told me that I could buy a sprig for £2.50 each. ($3.84)
I had a consultation with our florist the other day, who seemed to understand what I was after, and that the budget was small.
Then I got her quote of £453! ($696)
I was fairly aghast as I thought it would be A LOT cheaper than that, but I figured that would include the time it took to make them and the delivery costs. I spoke to Fiance, and he fingured that it would be fine (also not a flower person) and we’d get the deposit to her soon.
Then today I popped into a florists I was passing, on the offchance, and asked for a quote for the same things. £102. ($156)
I called up the original florist, to let her know that we wouldn’t be using her services, but thank you anyway. She asked why, so I just said that I’d found somewhere that would so the same thing, but for less than a quarter of the price.
At first she was defensive, saying that she had to factor in her hours making it, and she had to make a profit, and that I had to be careful that I didn’t get a substandard service etc etc. Then she started lowering her prices. Like REALLY lowering. She halved it, then went a bit lower. It was mad.
In the end I just had to say, ‘Thank you, but it won’t be possible to use your services,’ and pretty much just hang up on her.
I feel really angry that I could have been so badly ripped off by this woman if I hadn’t chanced upon a different florist this morning. We were all ready to pay the deposit, and I’m sure she would have been laughing all the way to the bank with the huge profit she’d have made.
I’ve been a bit hasty as I’m stupidly busy, and so far I’ve basically gone with the first vendor I met, rather than look around. The first cake person we saw, first reception venue, first dress shop etc. I’m so worried that I’ve lost out by not looking around.
I have TOTALLY learned my lesson though – and have booked consultations with a few more florists and some more photographers.
So yeah, just have a look round before you book someone!
Sorry for the rant, but hopefully it’ll spur other brides into being really careful and looking at different vendors and prices before they buy!
