This really depends on your social circle.

We know people who spent 50K on engagement rings. This is not abnormal for where we live, but it is in no way normal on a national level.

The ring should be what you can afford. If you plan to have kids especially there are a lot of expenses on the horizon and it’s best not to underestimate that.

I got engaged at 22 and my ring is .5 tcw. I love my ring, but right after getting engaged, Fiance got a new job and makes a lot more than he did when we got engaged, and he tried to get me to let him buy something bigger. Maybe one day I’ll have him just throw a bigger diamond in there lol

Engaged at 27 with a 1.47ct round brilliant.  But most of my friends were engaged between 24-25 years old with around 1 carat.

forthesoul :  I don’t know the TCW but my marquise diamond is .70 cts. Engaged at 24 married at 25! I was one of the first of my friends to get engaged and married, and our stone sizes all vary… Mine is actually one of the larger stones in the bunch, but there are also a few 3-stone rings so they might have more carats total. We don’t really talk about it so I don’t know for sure, just from observation.

Engaged at 25 and mine is 1.46 carats. Most of my friends who are engaged or married got around a 1 carat or smaller though.

Engaged at 27 with 1.25 carat old mine cut in platinum – but it was my great grandmother’s ring, so it was free and I would have happily used it if it were a smaller stone too. I love the sentiment of using a family ring and I’ve always loved vintage stuff, so it’s perfect for me. If Fiance had bought it I wouldn’t have wanted him to spend as much as a ring equivalent to mine would have cost. Not because there’s anything wrong with spending 10k+ on a ring if you can afford it, but because I’m a student, we don’t own a home yet, we want kids, we’re planning to pay for the wedding ourselves – so even though he makes pretty decent money, there are a lot of things we’d rather put the money towards. Most of the married people I know in my age group have much more modest rings (.25-.5 carat range) or just wear bands. If we had bought something new, it probably would have been in the 1500-2000 range.

I’m 27 and I have a round solitaire that is .51 carats.  I looked at rings with stones up to 1 carat, and my fiance would have happily bought me anything I wanted, but I have small hands and I preferred how a smaller stone looked.  I’m also fairly modest when it comes to jewelry, so I would have felt uncomfortable with a larger stone.  Most of the women my age have larger stones, closer to 1 carat, and I think they look great on them, but I did what I liked best for me.  You have to do whatever is best for you; you’ll be the one wearing it! Best of luck!

I got engaged when I was 19 and had a .75ct round Moissanite solitaire. And I loved that thing.

The ring I want next, which will hopefully (fingers crossed!) happen within about a year is a 2ct oval Moissanite with a halo. I’d probably never go that big if it wasn’t Moissanite, though. I’m 24 now so I’ll probably be 25/26 then.
