My original engagement ring was similar to jdhall89’s ring- a simple round solitaire with baguette side stones and a plain band. We managed to get it for under 1k as we were on a budget 10 years ago. Recently we upgraded my entire set for our anniversary.
Being in college, trying to work 2 jobs, I just didn’t see the point of spending a ton of money on a ring or ring set for either one of us. We had debt to pay off and add in a baby on top of it, we were pretty strapped. He surprised me with the original tho because I didn’t know he had been saving for awhile and never told me. Guys are sneaky like that!
Now that we’re both debt free we traded in my original for credit at our jewelry store and used the money from that to upgrade his wedding ring and what was left over we used for a pair of earrings for me as part of my anniversary present.

I love my upgrade and I’m glad we waited until we could afford it. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t have been very happy knowing we had so much to pay off.
Good luck to all you engaged and married bees! Your rings are beautiful!

@mrs.t_finally: Your ring is very pretty! Is the center stone blue or just a reflection? I feel the same as you about waiting to purchase an upgrade. When DH proposed I really couldn’t have cared less how big or small the ring was. I was so happy to be spending the rest of my life with my best friend.

This is a CZ + nickle ring. I’m getting an upgrade to a white gold channel setting with diamonds when he gets the money to. I think it’s pretty, I’m just not a fan of turning green.

Edit: I’m 18 and my fiancee is 23

I’m 23 and DH is 25 (22 and 24 when he proposed). The total weight of the diamonds is 1 ct with a half bezel setting.

Neither of us are college students, but I am 22 and Fiance is 26. My ring is a three stone with a .5 ct center marquise and small diamonds in a curved band.

We put my ring and it’s matching band on a credit card from Kay and are making payments on it. We could have gotten a cheaper ring right away but we wanted to do it this way to help build our credit. We are paying for it together.

I’m 23 (24 in June), graduating with my B.S. in Health Education in May. Fiance is 25, 26 in october, and has been working with his degree the last few years but has decided he wants to go to the fire academy this fall to be a firefighter. Thus, his budget has been tight so that he can pay for school and whatnot. I’m going to nursing school in January to get a B.S.N., so we originally were going to wait until after I got out. But, we decided to get married this December (’13) before I go to nursing school because it’ll be a hectic program (fast-track) and I probably wouldn’t have time to devote to him unless we lived together, which we both didn’t want to do until we were married. Sooooo…we got engaged. ๐ I didn’t want a diamond and fell in love with moissanites last year, so he got me a 6mm/.75ct split shank ring. I don’t have it yet though, he ordered it a month ago. Even though we’ve begun wedding planning, he still wants to do a special proposal. Hehe. I can’t wait ๐ Here’s a pic from the site:

@Joleenmarie0617: thank you! it was actually the flash from the sun making it blue. I thought it was kind of cool lol. I wish my camera could take decent pics in the dark because when we lay in bed it shimmers and sparkles from different little lights. yeah I love my ring and it gets me all girly and giggly lol.
as a side note- I love the fact that I’m the oldest grandchild in my family so having such a nice ring set makes me all gooey. not trying to brag or be vain but it’s like a huge accomplishment for us since we are completely debt free and feel good knowing we’re not drowning. we didn’t have a large wedding- we eloped. we didn’t buy an expensive wedding set originally so it made things a lot better.

We got engaged a month and a half after I turned 23. He was planning on proposing on my graduation day from college but he just couldn’t wait that long. I just graduated a few weeks ago and he works full time…We were engaged at ages 23 and 26 and we are now 23 and 27. My ring is a 1 carat princess solitaire in white gold. My ring’s original price was $7,000 but we knew the jewelry store manager and he talked the owner down to $3,500. My Fiance put $1,500 down and has the remaining $1,500 on the store credit card which has zero interest and will be paid off before our wedding. He bought my wedding band a month ago at the same jewelry store and the original price was $1,400, but only paid $530 for it. I, however, got his ring for a steal. It is a simple titanium ring from the same store but I paid only $32!
