So the relationship I have with my (very!) soon-to-be stepson is one of constant two steps forward, three steps back. Sometimes it’s not that many steps back. Sometimes it’s not a negative number in the end. But then there are times like tonight where he just cracks me up and I think, “Wow, this kid really does have it in him to be a truly awesome little human and not the spoiled, coddled, baby-talking thing his mother insists on making him.”
My mom had dinner with us tonight and the three of us were practicing very basic sign language (alphabet, a few random nouns). Paul doesn’t know any, so he was kind of zoned out. Well, dinner is always a huge battle with the kid because he never just eats. He talks and gets up and dances in his seat and drags it out as long as possible until he’s left at the table to finish by himself and then he cries because he doesn’t want to be alone. My mom always thought I was exaggerating about him, but tonight she saw otherwise. So she told him that she was going to beat him in the “race” to finish dinner first, and that the rules said no talking, no singing, no dancing, no random alien space ship sounds, etc. So he took a bite of food and while he was chewing, he lifted up his hand and, totally deadpan, signed B O O. I died laughing. I signed back E E K and felt really bad because he dissolved into trying-to-be-silent-but-not-quite-managing-it giggles. My mom was trying so hard to keep a straight face.
So that’s my awesome kid moment of the day. What’s yours?
