Always looking for personal stories from actual woman rather than scary articles on the internet when it comes to birth control ideas. So, ladies who do not want to be pregnant at the moment, what works for you? What definitely didn’t work? What do you use now? What’s your favorite?
I had the paragard (copper IUD-no hormones) for 4 years and it was great until it started giving me insane cramps and two-week long periods. I had it removed and now have the mirena IUD (hormonal). I’ve had it for 2 years and so far so good!
I liked the idea of the Paragard because it is hormone-free and I’d like to be as natural as possible but it made me miserable. And I do not want to track/use condoms at all.
What have your experiences with BC been like? Not thinking about sterilization at this point!

I don’t want to use hormones either so for me it’s FAM and condoms.

I’m CFBC so in 5 years will have my tubes tied.
Right now – the Mirena and I love it! No problems and the last 3 months – no period! Woohoo! Check for my strings monthly which is so easy.
I was on BC pills for over a decade and had no issues there either – my GYN recommended the Mirena and I liked the idea of no periods 🙂

sweetdee89 : I am CFBC as well and FH wants to get a vasectomy but is struggling to find a doctor who will do it until after he has kids. It’s backwards thinking to me but we’ll keep looking. I personally haven’t talked to my GYN about getting my tubes tied but I would like to eventually. I’m worried no doctors will do it for me either until I’m much older or have kids first. Have you faced similar obstacles? I’d love to hear more about your experience.

I used to be about the hormones. I never had an issue with it until after my daughter came. Then I felt like I could go the rest of my life without sex and I would be totally fine with it. I had zero drive, I didn’t want to be touched. While it was happening, I would just want it to be over
i thought it was the medications I’m on for anxiety, we added some, took some away, changed doses. Nothing brought the drive back
Then I stopped the nuvaring so I could track my cycle, we will be ttc number two in a month or so. And my drive is back! I actually enjoy it again (I had zero drive with mirena or the pill and then the nuvaring).
So, after the second baby I’ll be exploring non hormonal options, maybe the non hormonal iud if I don’t want to rely on condoms

Sansa85 : I took the pill for 3 years and had AWFUL side effects like you. I can so relate. Not only did it kill my sex drive but it raised my blood pressure through the roof and made me gain weight. Once I stopped taking it I almost immediately felt better. Never again. I’m so sorry you went through that as well. Sending good thoughts your way as you TTC baby #2!!! How exciting! 🙂

I’ve had the mirena IUD for close to 5 years and absolutely love it! Nothing to remember, never had any issues and no periods! My husband had a vasectomy 2 years ago and I didn’t have it removed. I also plan to get one again as I LOVE the no period side effects! Before the IUD I was on the pill and didn’t like the side effects, occasionally forgot a pill and just generally didn’t like it.

I’m on the pill. I guess I lucked out and don’t experience any negative side effects from being on it. We also used condoms for awhile but I definitely prefer the pill. I’m way to paranoid about getting pregnant to do the pull out method or NFP.
I was thinking about trying an IUD but we’ve decided to TTC next summer so it really doesn’t seem worth it.

I’ve always used condoms. I didn’t like the idea of putting artificial hormones in my body. With Dh, we used condoms until we were okay with a possible oops baby using the pullout method.

hikingbride : i didn’t have any problems until after I had a baby! That’s why I was so surprised, I started getting headaches with the pill and all three forms killed my sex drive

No pill/hormones here. There are too many possible side-effects in my opinion so it’s not worth it to me. We use temping/FAM and condoms. It worked flawlessly for 2 years, then I got pregnant first try.

I’m on my second Mirena IUD as of last week!
Other than the pain (and anxiety leading up to insertion five years ago and re-insertion a week ago), I really do like it. After the first month or so, I didn’t have a period for four years, and random spotting/small periods during my final year.
I didn’t notice a huge shift in sex drive, but I did have minor weight gain. I’ll have this IUD in for the next two or so years before taking it out “early” to start TTC!

I’ve got the implant in my arm. To be honest it’s been great for me because I have no periods with it and don’t need to worry about tablets and such. That said I’ve yet to have a kid so I don’t know how it will affect me when I’ve had one. I can say it definitely made my sex drive take a bit of a dip.

I used the pill for 5 years and then nuvaring for 5 years and much preferred the nuvaring. It’s easy, only have to put it in once every three weeks, and I had no side effects. I was also able to get pregnant right away after stopping so it didn’t mess me up too much.

Sansa85 : Ugh, that is the WORST! That happened to me with hormonal IUD.
I had hormonal IUD, which I loved until it stole my sex drive completely. I was like PP, I could have gone the rest of my life without sex and not cared one bit. I had it removed and went on a BC pill that was carefully selected based on hormone levels, hoping it would balance out my hormones and my drive would return… it’s been 3-4 months and it has bounced back a bit, but not entirely. Fiance and I will likely TTC not long after our wedding in Nov, so I’m really looking forward to dropping my BC completely & having things return to normal!
