I often see worries and concerns about gemstones of various kinds being “durable enough” for everyday wear.
While I wouldn’t suggest anyone do the washing up in their opal, with a little care and attention it’s safe to say you can have jewelry you wear a lot made from softer stones and be just fine. The pointier cuts of Diamond are more prone to chipping yet they are still generally worn without fear.
I have an Aquamarine handed down from 50 years of wear by my grandmother. The setting is worn thin but the stone is like the day it was new.
The Crown Jewels of Britain are over 450 years old and heavily worn before it was considered less tasteful to plaster oneself in pearls, emeralds and rubies. I’ve seen them, they still look goid, trust me 😉
My message is – yes softer stones require more care and attention, but if you love them and want one don’t let that stop you! Get insurance and enjoy the glorious rainbow of gemstones out there ^_^
(If Diamonds are your thing have a gander at the 530 ct great star of africa colourless diamond. )
