I didn’t even think of Ewan McGregor.. The name sounds British to me!

I think Ewan MacGregor made it common *enough* so that people have at least heard of it. The worst side effect is your child having to correct people’s pronunciation and spell it forever–BUT, that’s not going to be at all unusual for anyone in his generation (hello Mckynzi, Kelleigh, Xander/Zander, Madelyn/Madeline/Madeleine/Maddalynne…) We’re contemplating the name Rhys which is a classic Welsh name, but not as common in the US (although Jonathan Rhys Meyers gave it a bit of a boost).

I mean, to me there’s a difference between choosing a name that is unusual simply because it’s ethnic and therefore uncommon in your neck of the woods, and say, making up a name or choosing it because it’s yooneek and cre8tiv. My first name is Chinese and my middle name is Hawaiian. Both are not common on the mainland, but since they relate to my heritage, I’m proud to have both of them, even if it caused a few surprised looks over the years.

We had someone on our guest list named Ewan and Fi had to tell me how to pronounce it correctly because I was calling him EEE-WON.
