@Miss Tattoo: Love this post, and I totally agree. All of this stuff is subjective, none of us are experts. We’re all entitled to our opinions, and while I like to know if people like something or not, I HATE the word tacky–it’s not constructive, it’s not a critique, and it doesn’t really mean anything–it just insults.

Laughed so hard at the Pee Wee pic, too!

Hear! Hear!

Of course, I am not going to agree that there are no etiquette absolutes, or that anything goes with modern manners, or that all styles are equal. But no-one would expect me to.

I DO agree that the lambasting of this-or-that as “tacky” and the angsty queries about whether things are tacky or not, recall vividly to mind a gang of teenage girls mindlessly shrieking “EEEWWW” at things they haven’t ever thought about, and other teenage girls desperately trying to make sure that the “in” crowd isn’t going to shriek “EEEWWW” back at them. When we have a knee-jerk reaction that there is something wrong with someone’s idea or suggestion, can’t we each spend a bit of effort examining our own response and finding out what it is that we are really reacting to? Point out the actual impracticalities, or insensitivities, or aesthetic conflicts inherent in the idea, and why they are problematic? And, maybe even self-censor if the only problem is that it isn’t the way we would do it, or is something new we haven’t seen before?

I like the AAAAAHHHH! response. I hate the picture, because I think subtlety and the in-joke are more powerful influencers in the end, than the obvious and ridiculous (and I do think Peewee is ridiculous; I always have).

I think the whole “cookie-cutter wedding” perjorative is even sillier, by the way. The same people who damn cookie-dutter weddings are often the most rigid about the traditions that they do decide to maintain. And, often, the “innovations” some brides choose in their search for novelty end up being fads they found on the internet — they, and all other billion internet users: how novel is that going to be? Especially when the most unique feature of  every wedding is that it is YOURS — and no amount of conformity can diminish how special that is. But most of all, I laugh at the cookie-cutter accusation because, nowadays, the surest way to have a unique wedding would be ACTUALLY to keep all of the traditions and protocols that traditional conformity would demand!
