I haven’t saved anything yet because I haven’t really spent the money, but I DO plan on doing a few DIY things.  I saw this wood signature mat for our guests to sign on Etsy, but J looked at it last night and said he could do that so easily and it’d be way cheaper.  I also plan on making my own brooch bouquet, but I’m not sure how well that’ll work out.  I am slowly getting DIY ideas together so I’d love to see if anyone else has great ones.

Here it is.  It’s nothing completely fancy and it’s an inspiration.  I’ll probably make it more unique or figure something to add to it. 🙂

I haven’t started purchasing anything either, but will be DIYing things that I can’t afford and don’t care about (or want to make more personal). Deseree, my friend just got married and did a brooch bouquet. It was sooo beautiful. There are some online tutorials at Offbeat Bride. She offered to make me a beaded bridal bouquet, and after looking at what is available online and how much fresh flower bouquets are, we will be making all boutonnieres, corsages and Bridesmaid or Best Man bouquets out of beads and some silk flowers. The most promising venue we’re looking at right now does pretty much everything except cake and flowers, so I think I’ll just get a nice small cake for pictures/cutting and bring in costco sheet cake. Of course, it could all change at this point… 🙂

Whoops.  Wrong picture.  I tried editing, but it’s not coming up.

My money-saving secret was having a SMALL wedding! We only had 35 guests. We were able to serve them a nice meal without breaking the bank.

Another thing we did to save money, overall, was to keep things simple. We did not need to spend money on decorating because our venue was already nicely decorated. We did not do a lot of “extras,” such as Out of Town bags, favors, transportation, flowers besides bouquets and bouts, centerpieces, fancy chairs, etc.

My wedding money saving advice would be to do a lot of research before you make the final decision. It will save you from having to buy multiple of the same things b/c you found something you like better.

Also, DIY, ebay, and thriftshops.

I bought all the chair covers, tablecloths and napkins, and re-sold them to recoup some of the money spent. We got bouts and bouquets and extra flowers from a package deal from Sam’s Club. For both weddings we did non floral centerpieces, which doubled as favors. Scoured the classifieds here and on other wedding sites and bought leftover favors to use for bridal showers~did the same for placecards (beach chairs that we painted to match colors. They were new in the package but the bride didn’t end up using them~got them for 1/3 the regular price). Ran an ad on Craigslist looking for someone to do a cake~original would have been over $1200., but she did it for $600.

There’s lots of ways to save money when wedding planning, but it can take some time and negotiating. I had a great time!

@SoontobeMrsA: We did stacked boxes filled with different things…sunglasses, cookie cutters, chocolate truffles, shaped soaps….just to make them fun and different. They were a hit. Below is a picture of the trial run with the  boxes. Can’t see them very well in the reception pictures, but I’ll look.

The other one we did Wanderfuls…tubes filled with chocolate kisses and the tops were hand shaped paper flowers. They were a hit too, but ended up costing as much as florals would have.

The flowers from Sam’s were perfect and fresh and lasted for a week after the wedding.

Below is the top of the tubes in wedding colors…like handmade flowers.
