Can you not get out of it because of your status as a student? Just wondering. I got summoned in Undergrad and had to get my school to sign a form.

@Miichelle: I’d definitely try it. πŸ™‚ Hopefully it works and can take something off your plate.

Just tell them you are racist, biggoted, and like to eat killer wales for dinner. They wont want you then! (Even if all of that is far from the truth)

I am lucky because going into Law Enforcement I am one of the LAST people they want sitting on a jury! Defence doesn’t like legally minded people so I have never and will never get called.

@Mrs Hedgehog: Eh, hopefully you are right but my Criminal Law PROFESSOR got called in for jury duty and they kept her. Seriously. I was confused too, but apparently it didn’t matter that she used to be a lawyer, that she now teaches at a University and is head of the Criminology department, or that her husband used to be LAPD. Ha!

My husband is a retired police officer, so I know a lot of officers. I still got picked for a criminal trial once but got out of it at the last second before it started because I knew one of the arresting officers (he got there after they had done jury selection).

My husband got called, They said they wouldn’t use him for criminal trials, but would for civil trials. It turned out that he never heard a trial, but still had to show up every day until they excused them for the day.

But to the point–in a lot of jurisdictions, there is a form to fill out on the back of the summons that will let you delay your appearance. You never know how long the delay will be for, but I used it once (we were going on vacation). Seven months later, I got the call back. You might try asking your clerk if they have something like that.

So glad I’m not the only one ! I’ve got work at a day care and at a nursery, school, wedding planning, three bridal showers, three weddings and three baby shows to attend, and on top of all of that I had surgery Wednesday – and ended up in the ER for 6 hours Thursday to find out I have to get ANOTHER surgery 0_O…

I feel insane…!

By The Way : surefire way to get out of jury duty…

Tell them you watch nothing but Tru TV and that in your mind, everyone is guilty.

I think they somehow send it to teachers more frequently!

I just got a Federal one and just called and they asked when I wanted to postpone it for, so I picked summer.  I stressed about it for a month before hand, but when I called it was actually really easy.

You’ve already done your duty and recently, try to postpone or cancel it.

I think if you get both federal and state you only have to serve one.  I could be TOTALLY wrong, but my fiance somehow got out of county because he got called for federal right around the same time.  I would give the county number a call.  Also, I think you can push your jury duty a couple of times (like if it’s a really bad time), so if you’re a student, I think you can get it pushed to the summer.  Again, I could be TOTALLY wrong, but I think I did this when I was a student.

Good luck!
