okay I know a lot of bees have had bad experiences with big box stores like Kay , Zales ect. (myself included) but in this instance Zales turned out to be my hero! I had wanted to reset my original engagement ring stone into a vintage setting that had belonged to one of my aunts. I have posted about it in a couple of different threads. However each time I visited a jewelry store -both independent and chain -I was told it was not possible because the older ring was in need of too much repair and often I was given snarky responses as to why I would even want to reset such a small stone (it is only about. 08). I found this rather offensive because honestly it’s none of their business why I would want to do this. The stone has meaning to me and that is all that matters. I was discouraged and about to the point of giving up when at the mall I passed by a Zales and a sales associate smiled and said hello to me. I said hello but kept on walking and then on a whim decided to go back and show her the ring just to see what she would say (I was still carrying it in a little bag in my purse) WOW what a difference! To my surprise she was very professional and nonjudgemental. She said of course it could be fixed- just needed a new heand and she could send it to their repair shop and they would call me in the next day or two with an estimate on cost so I could decide if I wanted to have them go ahead with the work. Sure enough within 2 days I received a call with an explanation of what would need to be done and what the cost would be. It was right around the ballpark figure she had estimated -about $180. This was to put a new head on the ring, reset the stone (which had to be removed from the pendant setting it was in) and polish up the old ring like new. The jeweler told me it would take about two weeks but lo and behold four days later I got a call that my ring was ready and it turned out wonderfully!
I cannot say enough good things about how I was treated and the work they did. I was so impressed I brought in another ring to have them look at for resizing. It is also an older ring and I have been hesitant to allow anyone to work on it. The sales associate was able to correctl identify the region and time period this ring came from although it is quite old and no longer had its markings due to previous sizings. I was impressed with her knowledge and it gave me confidence to allow them to resize the ring. It also turned out beautiful.
Regarding the ring I had my stone reset into – I had previously brought it to Halzberg, Kay, Ben Bridge and a couple of high-end local independent jewelers. All had refused to work on it! I Just thought I would post this as we hear so many negative things it is nice to share a positive experience with a big box store and it is a credit to the associates I dealt with. I will definitely go back to them for any further repairs.
