so finally i get some time to write up the birth story of our lo! this is the story of a natural birth in a birthing center with a wonderful midwife.
on day 40+5 after days of getting increasingly impatient, my water broke around 5pm while i was taking a nap at home but i didn’t have any contractions. at least i knew that things were moving! the midwife came and had a look at me and the baby and told us to get to the birthing center for fetal monitoring around 9:30. dh and i had dinner, watched some tv, still no contractions. we went to the birthing center and i got some more intense cramping but didn’t think anything of it because it didn’t hurt to badly and i’d had some strong bhs in the weeks before. the midwife told us to go home and get some sleep and relax, and if there weren’t any contractions in the morning, to drink some castor oil. we were home by around 11:45 and seriously, the second i lay down in bed, contractions started, coming every two minutes! i was in total shock by the intensity of it and also because being a first time mom, i thought the whole thing would take hours from there. i had mentally prepared to have some time to relax and regain my strength between contractions but they just kept on coming.
dh called the midwife who initially thought i was a hysterical first time mom 🙂 and told me to take a shower and wait. the shower intesified the contractions which were coming at 1 minute intervals. that’s when i got quite desperate, thinking i couldn’t do this for hours and hours… dh called the midwife again around 1 am who then heard me roar over the phone and immediately told us to get to the birthing center! the 12 min drive over was certainly the longest of my life and i actually started feeling the urge to push while in the car. i though i was seriously going nuts because this couldn’t possibly be the real thing but just gave in.
when we arrived at the birthing center, the midwife just had one look at me, immediately took me to the birthing room and just started throwing some blankets on the floor where we got down to business and she told me she could already see the head. this was the most encouraging thing in the world, telling me that i could trust the instincts of my body plus that it would be over soon. the whole pushing was much of a blur, with me clinging onto dh and being kind of out of my mind, and 30 min later, our little angel was born at 2 am! afterwards, the three of us got to spend around half an hour together in bed, we had our first attempt at breastfeeding, dh cut the umblicical cord and we just had a wonderful first time to bond as a family.
we were able to go the comforts of our own home early in the morning to relax there and get acquainted with our little boy. changing the original plan of a hospital birth to (pretty spontaneously) going to a birthing center was definitely one of the best decisions of my life and i am so grateful to have been granted this truly amazing and empowering experience.
having heard and read all those horror stories about births, i hope this can give some of you encouragement that it doesn’t always have to be that way and that even a first birth can go quickly and (relatively) easily!
