I’d wait until the last minute to commit to going. if you get pregnant before then, don’t go. After that, it depends how badly you want to go on the trip. If you’re not pregnant by then, either go and put TTC on hold for a few months, or don’t go (and explain to them why). Or you could just plan on going and make sure you get trip insurance, then you cancel if pregnant, and you take a month or two off trying during/after the trip if you’re not pregnant.

We just cancelled a June Mexico trip for the same reason. We’ve been TTC for 4 months and we’re pretty sure I’ll be pregnant by then (this is our second baby, so we know I don’t have any big fertility issues), and even if I’m not, we don’t want to put it on hold to go.

How long do you have before you commit? I would just wait until the last second. If you’re not pregnant (for sure- so not in the TWW) then I would go but you would have to be willing to delay TTC for a few months- I would probably be waiting at least 2 months to TTC after being there if it were me. So I guess that depends on if it is worth it to you or if you would rather keep TTC. If you do commit to go and get pregnant, I would not go. Can you eat the expenses or get trip insurance?

I would probably tell your parents…is there a reason you don’t want to?  Even a simple “I stopped using protection to see what happens so I don’t want to risk traveling there”.  It doesn’t need to be a long explanation.

BowTiedKangaroo:  you could say you don’t want to go because of crime. Unfortunately I think it might be a problem in Puerto Rico right now. You could search for more info in the news.

Mid March as in 6 weeks from now?  So really you’d just get one more TTC cycle in?  Personally, I’d just postpone TTC for a month and go on the trip.

BowTiedKangaroo:  There is another thread posted today about the Zika virus, check it out. Not much is known about how the zika virus could affect men so although you not being pregnant might be fine, I would try to read up as much as you can about how it could affect TTC when you return (if either of you contracted the virus)

Long time reader, first time poster. Scientist (medical focus) bee here. I would find any excuse not to go. The zika virus is super dangerous to pregnant women, especially women in the first trimester. According to the CDC, the zika virus is cleared from the blood in about one week and the virus will not harm the baby after the virus is cleared. However, I have heard from friends who are licensed professionals that there have been some unproven reports of transmission within a few months prior to conception. In short, there is still a lot of missing info on this virus. This is not a risk I would take. Say you have a work trip, a big project or no time off.

I would find some excuse not to go even if it means telling your parents that you are trying. The virus is dangerous to pregnant women and can cause severe birth defects. You could be pregnant when you’re there and not know it. And there was discussion on another thread about if you should wait after returning from an effected country before TTC.

I live in NY and we plan on trying soon and I’m still crazy afraid of Zika and thinking how to keep mosquitos off my property this summer. As much as I would love a vacation right  now, I wouldn’t feel comfortable going anywhere tropical where it has been found. I would spend the whole vacation looking for mosquitos on my body and spraying myself with bug repellents – just thinking about it makes me anxious.

Someone in the other thread commented that the disease stays in men so your Darling Husband could pass it on to you.

No clue if thats true but I’m totally freaked out by the whole thing.

Hi Bee,

My girlfriend was supposed to go to the Carribbean for her bachelorette in Feb (She’s 5 months along) and she’s just cancelled the trip today for this exact reason.

Better safe than sorry. Good Luck.

Honestly I wouldn’t go! On one of the websites I was reading (and I’m not sure if it’s a media hype) but it literally said don’t go if your pregnant or TRYing to get pregnant.. Check into it to be sure but I’m sure it said that!
