They’re actually more supportive!  I haven’t managed to find any pictures yet, but essentially the inner “corset” is an attached long-line bra/shapewear that hooks in the back, and then the zipper of the dress closes over it.  Since it’s attached to the dress, it gives a smoother line than a separate bra would and you don’t have to worry about it showing under the dress.

A corset back is mostly there to be decorative and usually isn’t as supportive, unless you have someone who REALLY knows how to lace it up.

I have one, though not a pic. The only problem I have run into is that the back of the dress doesn’t quite curve with my spine, making my waist look wider (in profile) than it is. A simple dart on either side (even in a lace dress) fixed the problem though!

I personally didn’t care for it and didn’t feel as “sucked in” as I did on a straight corset. I ended up with a corset alone.

I love the inner corset. I tried on the Mori 4504, and that inner corset “sucked” my waist in better than the corset dresses that i tried on. I would not believe how flat my stomach was in that dress.

I then decided that i did not want a corset dress anymore (also because i did not like the look of it) but a inner corset over zipper with buttons. So i decided to get Bonny 913.

Enzoani does zippers over inner corsets–I LOVE mine. I feel so supported, and I’m not even going to have to worry about a bra. (C cup) I think Anjolique does these too. it was one of the things that sold me on my dress.
