I take a combination of Wellbutrin (also a SSRI) and Zoloft. The Zoloft was added about 2 years ago to combat my horrible PMDD. I haven’t had any weight gain. In fact, I lost a little when I started taking them together. My appetite was somewhat repressed. I’ve now leveled out.

I am taking Lexapro now and haven’t noticed any weight gain. But then again, I am exercising and dieting for a wedding so maybe that’s why. You scared me, I don’t want to gain weight lol

Are you just experiencing anxiety? There are a lot of meds that are antianxiety agents and not also used to treat depression, like SSRIs are. For example, I have taken Buspar in the past. PMDD is premenstrual dysmorphic disorder. It’s like PMS on steroids and crack. LOL

I actually lost weight on Zoloft. I’m not sure why, maybe I was stress eating before and that stopped when the Zoloft eased my anxiety? I’ve taken it two separate times and both times I lost weight on it. I tried Celexa and something else, maybe Prozac, neither worked well for me and neither had any noticeable impact on my weight. I was worried about weight gain too, but for me the Zoloft had the opposite effect. You never know how it affects you unless you try it.

I was switched to Zoloft b/c I was trying to get pregnant, but I’ve had zero weight gain (other than baby). I’ve been on a few SSRI’s previously to find the right fit and I never gained weight with any of those either. I assume everyones reactions are different.

WillowBee33:  I stopped it the first time because I moved and temporarily didn’t have insurance/had to find a new doctor. I think I took it the first time for a little over a year? Then I took it again for about 1.5-2 years and stopped because I finished school and things were less stressful, so I figured it was a good time to see how I’d do without it (I took it mainly for anxiety, but it addressed some depression issues too).

WillowBee33:  When I first started taking Zoloft, I gained a bit of weight. I’m not sure if it’s entirely to blame on the Zoloft because I was in law school and fairly sedentary with a poor diet.

I personally hated the way zoloft and lexapro made me feel like a zombie, so I switched to Effexor at the recommendation of my doctor and I actually dropped a few pounds (known side effect of Effexor).

futuremrsg18:  this is promising. I just started Effexor.

WillowBee33:  I think this is a tricky question for anyone to answer because everyone responds differently to different anti-depressants. Do you have a Dr who is working with you to find the right one?
